South Coast Habitat Restoration

Restoring Healthy Creeks and Watersheds • Steelhead Trout Recovery • Community Outreach and Education

sigimg1

“South Coast Habitat Restoration manages a number of restoration projects in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. SCHR’s goal is to return creeks and watersheds to their natural and healthy state. To do this they remove non-native vegetation, stabilize creek banks, and remove migration barriers to allow steelhead trout to return to several miles of upstream habitat”.

“Road crossings, culverts, and concrete structures across our local creeks present barriers to steelhead trout migration. SCHR works with landowners and government agencies to remove or modify barriers to allow fish passage. SCHR works collaboratively with a diverse group of funders and project partners to remove important barriers to steelhead trout migration throughout the region.”

“Protecting watersheds and restoring steelhead trout requires that our entire community understand and share the dream. SCHR sponsors community based watershed groups to allow landowners, agencies, and public citizens to become involved. SCHR are also members of local collaborative efforts to improve watershed restoration initiatives.

Watershed Outreach and Education
“The Santa Barbara and Ventura communities have become increasingly aware of water quality problems in local creeks as well as in the ocean due to beach closures from high levels of bacteria, primarily from urban agricultural runoff.”

SCHR strives to enhance awareness about the importance of watershed resources, the impact of human activities on these resources, and the role that watershed restoration plays in improving water quality and aquatic habitat.”

SCHR promotes community awareness and works to inspire individual actions that protect our creeks, wetland, and ocean. SCHR works with a variety of partners including local schools, youth groups, local citizens, government agencies, community groups, and non-profit organizations, to participate in creek clean-ups, field trips, community presentations, and environmental restoration projects.”
