I placed an ad in Paddle Journal page 190 and received my winter 2013/2014 copy in the mail today. The cover page says “Heavy Water, Chasing Giants” by Gerry Lopez and Robin Johnston. Just thumbing through it looks like a great issue. Christmas is over and some of you and your family may have received a new or used surf or SUP board. Now you should decide how to carry it and your gear. There are several choices and I myself use our Newf Surfboard Net bags for every day use and I use my board bags so when I fly on the plane. I put my Newf Surf bag in my suitcase and use it at my destination so my board bag doesn’t get wet, sandy or waxy and the bag Newf Surf bag is light on my SUP board.
A little history!
Through the 35 years working for the State Parks and being at the beach, I saw a lot of surf boards dropped, mis-manuvered from handling and the wind. I saw boards dragged and additional gear falling off shoulders and off boards where it hung in transit falling into the sand and dirt. I seen leashes wagging in the wind and boards bouncing up and down and side to side as the vehicle flew down the highway. I have heard surfers complaining about the access wax and debris in their board bags.
When I designed Newf Surfboard Net bags (www.newfsurfboard.wpengine.com) I took all these observations and tried to create a bag that would solve as a “solution to all those specific problems”. Our companies bag is the solution and will fit the needs to most of the problems described above. Our bags help with the transportation, carrying, cleaning (rinsing) and storage of your boards. They are light, compact and guaranteed. When I was in Oahu, many locals and surf shops expressed the importance of products being made in Hawaii and the United States. I took that and designed the bag and found a local fabricator, so it would be local to discuss ideas, changes in design, stock and working conditions. Due to working to protect the environment for years, I decided to become a “One Percent for the Planet” member and support other non-profit events. I chose Surf Ambassadors that have the love of the ocean, the environment and their community. When I started all of this skimming off my teacher salary, I didn’t realize how hard it is to start a company your way. I did a Patagonia Corporate tour and discussed my idea with Yvon. I believe in what I created and maybe others will see the need for the Newf Surf bag. There is still a need for travel/board bags and socks depending on your need. Look at Newf Surf for your bag needs. Another nice day in Central Cali, get out and play. Paddled in Santa Barbara many seals. one came up with a big fish in it’s mouth and another had an octopus.
